ESL Sports Centre
The ESL Sports Centre at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York, offers year-round recreation including skating, amateur and semi-pro hockey league play, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball and indoor football. In addition to its rinks and arenas, the facility features a sporting goods store, restaurant and corporate offices. A Danforth designed HVAC system controls the main building environments, and a system originally created for large industrial buildings was configured for use in spectator areas. A radiant heating system provides warmth for spectators without melting the ice surfaces in the hockey venues. The ice temperature is maintained with a chilled brine system. The piping for this system is either embedded in sand (where hockey is played year-round), or installed in a concrete pad so the surface can be converted for sports requiring an artificial turf surface. Danforth also fabricated and installed a melting pit for ice disposal from grooming machinery.
