Sturgeon Point Pump Station

Sturgeon Point Pump StationThe Sturgeon Point Pump Station of the Erie County Water Authority (ECWA) handles 90 mgd (million gallons per day) of purified water. 70% of the water produced is distributed to the City of Buffalo, Village of Kenmore and Town of Tonawanda. The Danforth engineering department, along with their project managers, teamed with consultants from the ECWA and independent environmental engineers and scientists from Malcolm Pirnie to expand and convert the stations output from 24 mgd to 90 mgd. Twelve 1,250 hp vertical turbine transfer pumps, each weighing 27,505 lbs., were installed over a two-year period. Each produces 9,000 gpm (gallons per minute) of water. Three 2000 hp horizontal split-case water pumps, each weighing 19,365 lbs., were installed to produce 13,900 gpm. Associated piping and fittings fabricated by Danforth include: 48" diameter transfer pump discharge headers, 60" diameter transfer pump section headers, 48" delivered water pump discharge headers and 60" delivered water pump section headers, each measuring 150 feet in length. Since the expansion, the Sturgeon Point facility has pumped in excess of 100 million gallons of water per day and recorded a high of 109 million gallons.
