Home Heating

Warm air furnaces using gas, oil or electricity are the most common types of heating systems in homes today. Rather than relying on gravity to distribute the heated air through the home, most systems installed since 1950 are power driven by blower fans. Basically, the operation of this type of system is simple. Circulated air is returned through the furnace where a filter traps the air borne dirt. Then the blower motor forces the air through a heat exchanger which contains metal passageways to heat the air temperature several hundred degrees by rising combustion gases. These passageways heat the circulated air as the blower forces it throughout the home. A fan control switches the blower on and off and also shuts down the blower if the circulated air rises too high in temperature.
Forced air systems heat uniformly with register temperatures in the 110 to 125 degree range. They also respond rapidly to changes in temperature. Turning up a thermostat will not raise the temperature of the air entering a room through the registers - it only signals the furnace to continue pumping the air at until the desired temperature is reached! To conserve energy and improve home comfort, it is best to set a thermostat and leave it alone. Never adjust it up and down.
Controls
The warm air heating system is controlled by thermostats, which keeps the home at an even temperature and also regulates the system on and off functions. Be certain that the thermostats are properly positioned to suit the homes' heating requirements efficiently. Thermostats placed in cold hallways or hot kitchens will not provide efficient heating. Also, to conserve fuel, an automatic setback thermostat should be installed.
Maintenance Periodic maintenance of the system requires cleaning the burner and heating surfaces, adjusting the dampers, checking controls, oiling the blower motor and fan and adjusting the pulley belts.
Safety A gas furnace that is not burning properly can produce carbon monoxide fumes. This is a very dangerous situation.
