Buffalo Welder Named This Month’s Apprentice Highlight

Buffalo UA Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 22 member, Matt Berger, is this month’s Apprentice Highlight. Matt began his career at Danforth over seven years ago as a sheet metal fabrication trainee. He is now a third year apprentice on the piping side of the business. Matt is currently working in our Buffalo piping prefabrication facility.

Through his apprenticeship with the Local 22 and hands-on training in the fabrication shop, Matt earned his MIG (metal inert gas) Welding Certification. He is responsible for performing welds, tacking, grooving, fitting up and general fabrication tasks. By being in the fabrication shop, Matt actively supports multiple projects across the state. He is currently working on x-ray welds for Recycled Energy Development (RED) which aims to improve energy efficiency at the former Eastman Kodak Business Park located in Rochester, NY. Additionally, Matt’s prefabrication talents are being utilized for a project at Buffalo General Hospital.

Matt’s attitude and work ethic has set him apart from the day he started in the Buffalo sheet metal shop over seven years ago. He always shows up ready to learn and tackle any task put in front of him. Director of Shop Operations, Mike Bement commented, “Matt is a prime example of the Danforth internal mentorship program. We are always looking for bright young talent that we can teach and mold into tomorrow’s leaders.”

When asked about the future, Matt said he wants to focus on his apprenticeship and try to learn something new every day. He is passionate about producing high quality welds for the company and says that his skills will direct his career.

About the Apprentice Highlight

Since our inception as a company in 1884, our strength has been our skilled tradesmen in the field and fabrication shops. Our company has grown stronger from generation to generation for over 130 years. This is due in large part to our comprehensive mentoring programs.

We believe in preparing our employees for their future through mentorship. Our apprentices are the future of our labor force and will become the leaders on our jobsites and in our fabrication shops. Our comprehensive hands-on training program gives our apprentices the opportunity to learn from our skilled journeymen and foremen on keynote projects across New York State.

The Apprentice Highlight is an honor bestowed upon up and coming tradesmen who display leadership and pride in their work. Those recognized as the Apprentice Highlight show a passion for their trade, Union and Danforth. The Apprentice Highlight is someone who is not only a student of the trade, but also someone who leads and teaches other apprentices on the job-site.

We are proud of the Union tradesmen that we employ across New York State and beyond. These fine young men and women are at the core of our success and will continue to be in the future. Our Apprentice Highlight program is something that is important to identifying and growing the leaders of the future.
